Art Galleries to Visit in Bangkok

18/06/2018

Our insider guide to the very best art on offer in Bangkok, from established galleries to trendy studios.

Bangkok CityCity

A mere skip from the charming garden compound of the excellent Goethe-Institut (which is always worth a peek), this Sathorn studio hosts five large-scale shows a year, but it’s the diverse range of live performance, music and talks that keep it current. The go-to for edgy-but-accessible contemporary art and a champion of street culture in Bangkok, it’s a must for a snapshot of the artistic zeitgeist.

Gallery VER and Artist+Run, N22

Lofty warehouse N22 on Narathiwas is a collective of artist studios and galleries, standout among which is Gallery VER which showcases large-scale, experimental Thai talents. Diminutive neighbour Artist+Run, an offshoot of Angkrit Ajchariyasophon’s Chiang Rai gallery, veers towards abstract works by established rel="noopener noreferrer" names. Cafe-studio Tentacles is also on site for all-day java and light bites, plus workshops and screenings.

Cho Why, Speedy Grandma and Bridge

Between them, this triumvirate of indie galleries in Chinatown shows an eclectic range of Thai and international creatives. On hip-happening Soi Nana sits multi-storied Cho Why, repping a wide array of boundary-pushing art, photography and film screenings; stripped-back shophouse Speedy GrandMa pulls a young, mixed boho crowd with its lively opening nights and talks, while white-washed gallery-cafe Bridge is a terrific spot to ogle new names, beer in rel="noopener noreferrer" hand. All are regular haunts during the excellent, Gallery Hopping night.

Bangkok Art & Culture Centre

This spiralling, contemporary space is home to painting, multimedia and sculpture exhibits by Thailand’s big guns, plus an ace program of live music, theatre, film and talks – it also has a great kids’ offering and gift shop. A slew of international artists are also featured, while rotating curators keeps things interesting. Oh, and did we mention it's free?
