Three Alternatives to Chatuchak in Bangkok

25/04/2019
You’ve ticked off Chatuchak and traipsed around Asiatique, now hotfoot it to one of these three markets stacking that inimitable Thai mix of shopping, eating and laid-back vibes. Ready, steady… shop!

Talad Rod Fai Train Night Market

The current iteration of Talad Rod Fai (literally, train line market) might take its name from its ramshackle railway origins, but you’ll be hard pushed to find a choo-choo – today the vast, covered night bazaar sits behind mega-mall Seacon Square. Despite the canopy and partial air con, a grassroots feel prevails and its eclectic mix of vintage and street fashion, decor, antiques and trinkets is a magnet to the city’s young style crew. Swing by to stall-hop and graze from the cuisine-spanning street-food stands; live music adds to the atmosphere. Dress down and prepare to get hot.

Chang Chui Night Market

Founded by FlyNow fashion designer Somchai Songwattana, Chang Chui gives visitors plenty of reasons to schlep out to Bang Phlat. Straddled by a real-life Lockheed TriStar, the creative park studded art installations mixes hi-so with low via a range of stalls repping fashion, art and collectibles, plus food trucks and coffee counters aplenty. Visit the weekend flea market for maximum vibe.

Nang Loeng Market

You’d be forgiven for overlooking this traditional real-deal market secreted in Dusit, but as Bangkok’s first purpose built-marketplace (hence one of the oldest), it’s a must for foodies, foragers and shutterbugs alike – the layout has barely changed since it was established over a century ago. Pretty pastel European-style buildings surround a labyrinth of stalls laden with fresh produce and food spanning local noodle and duck specialities to traditional desserts. Go hungry and go early.
