An Architectural Day Out in LA

From its shiny Gehry marvels to its imposing Art Deco mansions, Los Angeles offers architectural intrigue at every turn. Head to these hot spots for your design fix.

Styled like a mock-Georgian villa with Art Deco portico and rooftop pool, The Peninsula Beverly Hills is an obvious place to start your architectural exploration, before hopping into your ride to Yosemite-inspired Schindler House, just off Melrose. The MAK Center’s current home was originally designed in 1921 by Rudolf Schindler to house two families in a co-op live/work space with original layout, Nippon-esque sliding doors, and innovative tilt-slab concrete walls.

Next up is Stahl House tucked in Hollywood Hills. This Pierre Koenig-designed Mid-Century icon – home to the stylish Stahl family – has been dubbed one of the city’s Historic-Cultural Monuments and appeared in numerous movies and fashion shoots, but you’re here for the dreamy 60s decor and unobstructed views across LA.

Next up, head south on La Brea until you espy cavernous, church-like République. Originally built by Charlie Chaplin in 1928 to host his office, today it’s a buzzy restaurant steered by Walter and Margarita Mankze. Gaze up at gloriously vaulted ceilings with retro-industrial decor, as you tuck into Gallic favourites like garlic escargots, steak-frites, and the best bread in the city.

Fuelled up, breeze down the Santa Monica Freeway, into the heart of DTLA where you can’t miss magnificent The Broad, a 120,000-sq-ft vision in white by Diller Scofidio + Renfro. What’s inside this honeycomb-covered cube should scratch your culture itch too, with everything from a formaldehyde Damien Hirst sheep to an immersive, interstellar Infinity Mirrored Room by Yayoi Kusama.

If hunger strikes again, skip across the lawn to warm woody boîte Otium, where accomplished chef Timothy Hollingsworth rustles up concoctions as wow-worthy as the restaurant’s futuristic fitout – try the snow crab with picatta, lemon and capers. Or, simply kick back on the lovely terrasse for stagger views of The Broad, with chill glass of Cali vino in hand, natch.

On the subject of wine, Hollyhock House – Frank Lloyd Wright's first LA commission – is soon to be hosting the popular Friday Night Wine Tastings, so if you’re lucky enough to be in town on a Friday, pack a blanket and rock up to the Barnsdall Art Park for evening house tours, 360-degree sunset views, food trucks, and, of course, stellar sips.
