LA’s Most Photogenic Hotspots
Fancy yourself a budding Diane Arbus? In honour of Los Angeles’ 10th Month of Photography, we dodge the Tinseltown cliches to spotlight the city's lesser-snapped Insta hotspots.
Snub: Los Angeles Public Library
Snap: The Last Bookstore
Waving your iPhone about is generally frowned upon in the lavish Los Angeles Public Library, so bookworms should head for more relaxed, and equally photogenic, The Last Bookstore. This epic 22,000-sq-ft, secondhand and new book and record store is a warren of visual intrigue, from the sculptures and mobile art installations to the belief-defying book tunnels and secret side rooms.
Snub: Griffith Observatory
Snap: Oue Skyspace
Sure, the Griffith Observatory boasts panoramic views of the city, but Insta-ready lippy and Saint Laurent platforms won’t mix well with the gritty, relentless 30-min uphill hike to get there. Instead, take the elevator up to breezy OUE Skyspace, Cali’s highest open-air observation deck with jawdropper 360-degree outlook, and a 45-foot transparent glass skyslide. Weeeee!
Snub: Venice Sign
Snap: Venice Canals
For many, Venice Beach means vibrant murals, flexing muscles, budgie-smugglers, skateboarders, and hippie tat, but lesser known is the small network of canals, tucked back from the boardwalk, which gave the nabe its name (duh!). Shaped like an aerial cricket stump, these three idyllic canal-lined blocks are punctuated with arching footbridges and charming multi-coloured beach houses.
Snub: LACMA Lamps
Snap: The Broad
There’s only so much creative mileage you can get out of pirouetting between LACMA’s ubiquitous street lamp installation, but skip over to The Broad and you’ll find a wealth of hashtag-worthy artworks, like an oversized table-and-chair set by Robert Therrien, Damien Hirst’s formaldehyde sheep, and Yayoi Kusama’s immersive, interstellar Infinity Mirrored Room. Archi buffs will be wowed by the museum’s magnificent, snowy, honeycomb-covered exterior alone.
