Hong Kong's Most Photogenic Spots

23/04/2018
Forget Hong Kong’s overcrowded public housing estates where selfie-stick wielding enthusiasts jostle for their Insta-shots, the city has abundant photo-opportunities. From verdant nature escapes to lesser-known architectural wonders, here are a few of the best picture-perfect locations.

What: Jockey Club Innovation Tower
Best For: Architectural angles

Housing both the Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design and the Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation, it’s little wonder this futuristic, white n’ glass Zaha Hadid-conceived marvel is a design destination in its own right. The 15-storey, 15,000 sqm louvred tower constructed atop a concrete podium is as equally striking on the inside as it is on the out, with Hadid’s signature curves giving the illusion of elevators and levels blending into one another.

What: Aqua Luna
Best For: Harbour panoramas

Sure, the Star Ferry is a terrific way to ogle the iconic harbour-scape, but you really can’t beat taking it in aboard Aqua Luna. One of the few remaining Chinese junk boats in Hong Kong, this historic wooden vessel, with its distinctive red sail can be enjoyed on both day and night jaunts. For the most impactful shot, book the Symphony of Lights Cruise.

What: Western District Public Cargo Pier
Best For: Sunset sights

Don’t let the name dissuade, this rustic sea jetty located in Kennedy Town is fondly known as ‘Instagram Pier’ due to its heavenly, unobstructed views across the water at sunset. While you won’t be the only one there, there’s plenty of space to ensure you secure a selfie, sans the crowds.

What: Dragon’s Back Trail
Best For: City vs nature

Yes, it’s a glute-busting hike to get to, but the 284m-high Shek O Peak offers splendid panoramas of the white-sand beaches of Shek O and Big Wave Bay, the South China Sea and the glittering city in the distance. Luckily, Dragon’s Back is one of the more accessible island treks – have a cab drop you outside the Correctional Institute on Shek O Road around mid-afternoon and up you go.
