Spring Shopping at Hong Kong’s Flower Market

31/03/2019

A surprisingly idyllic, flora-spangled enclave in Mong Kok, the Flower Market draws botancial enthusiasts expert and amateur with its medley of stalls selling fresh cut blooms, pretty potted plants and bulbs. Floral Designer and stylist, Gemma Hayden Blest’s beautiful installations have been photographed widely, and can be found adorning fashion showrooms, gourmet events and weddings both local and global. A regular at the Flower Market, Gemma shares her insider tips on where to shop this spring.

Magical Blooms: Lucky Flower

There is nothing quite as special as a prized orchid – step inside this store and cascading orchids will greet you in every hue and pattern imaginable. Potted in small containers, staff can help mount them into collective pots or displays. Prices are clearly marked but ask nicely and you might be granted a discount if buying two or three of the same kind.

Small Bouquets: Hing Fat Flower Market

Although many of the Flower Market stalls sell large bundles as wholesale, Hing Fat specialises in smaller, select quantities with their blooms arranged in a vivid spectrum of colour. Staff speak good English and are happy to help with all your needs; from creating a striking display for a special occasion or sourcing a rare stem of Japanese blossom to assisting with your selfie amid the foliage.

Silky Stems: Brighten Flori-art Plaza

Faux flowers have come a long way since granny’s polyester carnations of yore; quality silk creations are hardly distinguishable from the real thing -– both to the eye and touch. Brighten has the largest selection of faux silk stems imaginable; zip to the third floor to behold a sea of enduring blooms that make ideal gifts or take-home treasures.

Relax n’ Refuel: Hay Fever

Stop and smell the coffee at this cute florist-meets-cafe slap-bang in the middle of the market. Expert florists can nip/tuck you a bouquet while you find respite by way of a selection of sandwiches, cakes and a latte amid air-con comfort. It gets rammed on weekend mornings, but there’s extra seating upstairs.
