In Partnership with The Library Project, The Peninsula Shanghai Delivers Gifts of Learning and Eye Exams to Rural Students
In keeping with its longstanding commitment to social responsibility and community outreach, The Peninsula Shanghai reprised its partnership with The Library Project and Shanghai’s Renji Hospital to provide a fully stocked new school library, and free eye examinations, to children in one of China’s remote provinces.
The project was undertaken by a team of volunteers from The Peninsula Shanghai, led by Managing Director Jisoo Chon, and accompanied by three volunteer ophthalmologists from Shanghai’s Renji Hospital. Between 23 and 25 October, the team mobilized to visit the isolated Nine-Year Unified School in Wuguan Town, Danfeng County, Shaanxi province.
After a long journey that took nearly 20 hours to reach the destination, the work of these volunteers and donations from The Peninsula Shanghai facilitated the school’s 30 teachers and 102 students with a fully equipped library. This donation included more than 1,000 books, bookshelves and other educational materials. The reading room promises to be a valuable new resource for the entire school community.
During the same period, the doctors from Renji hospital conducted comprehensive eye examinations, and dispensed eye-care recommendations, for all students at the Nine-Year Unified School. These ophthalmology services were sponsored by The Peninsula Shanghai as part of the I (eye) Care Project, a programme launched by the hotel to identify and assist rural children with eyesight problems. The programme operates in tandem with the Library Project, and provides a dedicated, customized vehicle to transport Renji doctors and their professional equipment to far-flung provinces.
This latest collaborative effort reflects The Peninsula Shanghai’s ongoing pledge to help provide underprivileged communities with access to learning and healthcare – and to help children across China to learn, grow, and pursue their dreams.
