Autumn in Shanghai

There's no better time to visit Shanghai than fall (well, perhaps spring) as the temperatures dip and leaves begin to turn. Here are the most scenic outdoor spots to visit before the winter chill sets in.

Gongqing National Forest Park

Come autumn, over 200 species of trees including Ginkgo, Chinese tallows, Trident Maples and Callery Pears transform this sprawling estate into a magnificent firey spectacle. Located a short hop north of Shanghai’s People’s Square, the park is divided in two – head to the northern stretch where you’ll find a large island ablaze with burnished autumn trees reflected in the water surrounding it. Just beautiful. 

Century Park

This centrally-located, 346-acre lung is one of the city’s best for a family day out, and is rated year after year as one of the most impressive displays of fall foliage. Youngsters will love the tandem bikes for a pedal around the grounds, or paddle out onto the lake aboard a rowboat to take it all in from afar.

Zhongshan Park

If you don’t mind crowds, the city’s vedant Zhongshan Park is another great central option for groups with kids in tow. Go now, while temperatures are still mild enough to enjoy kite-flying, picnicking, boating and grazing from food stalls, as you admire the by a splendid views of Ginkgo, Red Maple and Green Camphor trees.

Moganshan

Called the ‘Hamptons of China’ by Vogue, this vast expanse of mountainous forest 2.5 hours drive from Shanghai is a popular weekend getaway for stylistas, statesmen and socialites alike. Although it’s picture-perfect year round, the lush scenery is all the more spectacular when embellished with a kaleidoscope of seasonal hues. It’s well worth the trip to explore the hiking and cycling trails (Mount Mogan being one of the most popular), and experience clean mountain air and calm respite. And exhale...
