08/06/2023

Whether you’re short on time or simply feeling well, languid. you needn’t venture far from The Peninsula to find some of Shanghai’s top attractions. Here’s where to eat, drink and play a mere 10-minute wander from the comfort of your suite.

Explore

Step inside the Bund’s most historically significant building, now the Rockbund Art Museum, to cast your eye over some of the world’s most cutting-edge artists. Dedicated to China’s thriving modern art scene, this ever-evolving collection includes temporary exhibitions (currently on show is the prestigious Hugo Boss Asia Art award), as well as educational forums and workshops. Critique complete, zip up to the sixth-floor cafe to enjoy a reflective coffee with fabulous Bund outlook.

Eat

For a fancy dinner affair, courtesy of celeb chef Paul Pairet (of Ultraviolet fame), sashay into cosmopolitan crowd-pleaser Mr & Mrs Bund. Vye for a window seat in this silver-grey rococo-ish salon to drink up more of that Bund tableau, before tucking into French brasserie-style classics and global delicacies, plus 32 sommelier-appointed wines by the glass.

Play

Night owls will want to push on until the wee hours, and luckily late-night slinky drinkers abound on the Bund. Dark, velvety, intimate Jazz at Lincoln Center (little sib to the NYC original) offers a diverse program of global music legends and rising stars. While The Nest reps a more clubby vibe, complete with an inventive vodka-centric cocktail list, raw-counter treats, floor-to-ceiling skyline panoramas and bangin’ DJ sets.
