Whether you’re a first-timer or repeat visitor, be sure to book these restaurants on your next visit to Tokyo.

Tacubo

What happens when mod-Italian recipes and succulent, locally-sourced cuts of meat get fired up over Japanese wood? Michelin star-dust and many a sated palate, that’s what. Opt for the counter over the private rooms at this at smouldering slate-lined n' exposed-beamed kappo-style restaurant to get an eye (and nose) full of the thrilling grilling. Don't miss the Hokkaido-sourced Tokachi wagyu and lamb.

Sazenka

Drawing on Japanese ingredients, ex RyuGin maestro Tomoya Kawada takes you on a Chinese culinary adventure at this modest charcoal-hued 12-seat salon. Secure one of two private dining rooms if you can; resist (if you can) the sake and dive on into the teas – you’ll thank us later.

Yaumay

Alan Yau’s buzzy dim sum palace forgoes squeaky trolleys for a sushi counter’s slick speed and service. Ignore the shipping container entrance, inside has an air of relaxed colonial chic, with white-coated waiters and a bustling open kitchen. Standouts are scallop siu mai and pea-shoot n’ prawn dumplings. Although dim sum might not traditionally be a solo pursuit, this is Tokyo and you’ll find plenty of pews for one around the counter.
