Traditional Experiences in Tokyo
Traditional Experiences in Tokyo
Hyper-mod and traditional all at once, nowhere offers quite as much cultural diversity as Tokyo. Take a deep dive into the more refined Japanese traditions via these five immersive experiences, from a night at the Sumo to an ancient tea ceremony.
A night at the Sumo
Well, they sure ain’t eating paleo! Sumo fights are exciting, but seasonal and remember it's also very serious, so no giggling at their unusual attire. There are three 15-day tournaments held in Tokyo each year, in January, May and September and you’ll need to book in advance – either book online or ask Concierge to arrange it for you. Post tourney, make like the big guys and have a chanko-nabe hot pot at nearby Kappo Yoshida (2-14-5 Yokoami). Reservations absolutely essential.
Happo-en Tea Ceremony
Book a ‘Garden Walk’ to enjoy a serene stroll through the picture-perfect Happo-en grounds followed by a traditional Japanese ceremony in a C.19th tearoom. A translator will help guide you through the full ceremony, with seasonal sweets and schooling in proper etiquette. Alternatively opt for the more casual 'Muan' matcha-making experience. Chaaah...
Ikebana Classes at Sogetsu School
Remarkably meditative, learn the age-old art of Japanese flower arranging at one of the group or private classes offered this esteemed Ikebana school. Taking a less is more approach, you’ll be amazed at what you can do with a few sticks and a daffodil. See website for details on English-language classes and book at least 3 weeks in advance to avoid disappointment.
Nihon Buyō Dance and Kimono Workshop
Frock up in a beautiful yukata and learn the moves behind Japan’s 400-year-old Nihon Buyō, which incorporates folk dance and a hint of pantomime-esque visual storytelling. Classes are free to join but must be booked in advance online at the Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center.
Origami Kaikan Classes
The production and folding of paper is indeed a fine art and you can watch the pros at work or give it a go yourself, at one of the origami and washi-making classes offered by the Kaikan workshop. Ask concierge to call ahead for the English language class schedule, or brave the daily Japanese version – just fold it like sensei.
