As it has for nearly a century, The Peninsula Hong Kong will invite guests to celebrate the arrival of the Lunar New Year this winter in signature Peninsula splendour. Beginning on 10 February 2024 – New Year’s Day on the Chinese calendar – a collection of festive activities, dining and spa offers, and exceptional stay experiences will let guests welcome the Year of the Dragon in style.

Magnificent Lion and Dragon Dance
The mesmerising Lion and Dragon Dance – a traditional Lunar New Year performance known around the world for its moves – has gained special renown at The Peninsula Hong Kong. This year, the auspicious ritual will commence on the morning of New Year’s Day on 10 February 2024 at the hotel’s forecourt before proceeding into The Lobby.

Featuring nine lions and one dragon, the dance will begin with a traditional lion-awakening ritual – dotting the eyes of the mighty creatures – followed by one of the most dazzlingly choreographed performances in the city. The dance troupe will include three exclusive Peninsula red-and-gold lions, each featuring the Chinese character of the hotel’s name on the back of its head.

As well as being a delight to behold, the dance is designed to bring luck, blessings and good fortune to both hotel guests and staff members throughout the coming year.

Guests who are staying at the Grande Dame on the first three days of the Lunar New Year will be offered auspicious Lunar New Year Fai Chun to bring home for good health, happiness and prosperity. A professional Chinese calligrapher will be welcoming guests and demonstrating this prized art and heritage near The Verandah and Spring Moon on the 1st floor at 11:30 am to 2:30 pm and 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm daily from 10 to 12 February 2024.

Gourmet New Year Hampers and Artisanal Treats

The chefs at The Peninsula Hong Kong’s Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant, Spring Moon, will once again offer an array of coveted New Year treats in honour of the Year of the Dragon. These delicacies, including a sumptuous Divine Treasures Hamper and an enticing selection of gourmet puddings, make luxurious gifts to share at family reunions or to signify appreciation and respect.

Inspired by the art deco-influenced interiors and stained-glass windows of Spring Moon, the elegantly packaged Divine Treasures Hamper (priced at HK$ 3,688) is filled with an abundance of celebratory treats such as red date pudding, 30-head dried abalone, homemade XO Chilli Sauce, 18-head fish maw, Hokkaido conpoy, aged Yunnan Pu-er premium tea, and more.

Red Date Pudding (HK$ 468), a classic Lunar New Year treat since the reign of the Qing Dynasty, has been a favourite of Spring Moon patrons over the past decade. The version created by Chinese Cuisine Executive Chef Lam Yuk Ming features delightful, sweet red date paste layered with aromatic coconut. Other holiday puddings include Turnip Pudding (HK$ 468), Taro Pudding (HK$ 408), Water Chestnut Pudding (HK$ 408), and New Year Pudding (HK$ 408) – all filled with blessings for the coming year and perfect for sharing with family and friends.

Made with a secret blend of chillies, dried scallops, dried shrimp, and spices, XO Chilli Sauce (HK $418 for 220g) was first created by chefs at Spring Moon in 1986, and it quickly became one of the most popular condiments throughout Asia and beyond. It is made by hand in house at The Peninsula Hong Kong, without MSG or preservatives, making it the perfect accompaniment for the savoury New Year puddings.

Guests who purchase any of the Chinese New Year treats offered at Spring Moon can enjoy a special price of HK$ 330 for the restaurant’s most famous condiment: its signature XO Chilli Sauce.

Pre-ordered Hampers and Chinese New Year Puddings may be collected at Shop MW18, M1 Floor, The Peninsula Hong Kong from 27 January to 9 February 2024. Now available for purchase online at The Peninsula e-shop: https://eshopphk.peninsula.com/

Preserving Tradition
In Chinese culture, it is a tradition for new parents to distribute vinegar-preserved pig’s trotters and red eggs to close relatives and friends to herald the arrival of their newborn child 12 days after the baby’s birth. This health-giving recipe helps to replenish collagen and keeps the body warm.

In celebration of the Lunar New Year, Spring Moon’s Michelin-starred culinary team has recreated this special auspicious dish using the finest ingredients, including pig trotters from Japan and three types of vinegar (sweet, white, and black glutinous rice vinegar) to create a perfectly balanced preparation.
