The Peninsula Chicago
The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important celebrations on the Chinese calendar that brings families together under the brightest moon of the year to welcome the harvest season while sipping tea and eating mooncakes, the traditional treat enjoyed on the holiday. The Mid-Autumn Festival takes place on September 29, 2023.
Mooncakes
In celebration of China’s annual Mid-Autumn Festival, The Peninsula Chicago offers the famous custard filled mooncakes from The Peninsula Boutique in Hong Kong. An eight-piece box of The Peninsula Boutique’s mooncakes is US$ 118—the number 8 being the luckiest number in Chinese culture. The mooncakes are available for purchase while supplies last via the hotel’s website. Mooncake orders can be picked up starting on September 1, 2023 through September 29, 2023.
The delicious tradition began in 1986 at The Peninsula Hong Kong, where the culinary team created a recipe for the hotel’s newly opened Spring Moon Restaurant to distinguish its round pastries from the traditional ones enjoyed across the city. While mooncakes are typically filled with lotus or bean paste, Spring Moon’s recipe features a decadent egg custard filling and a flakier crust.
Mid-Autumn Dinner Celebrations at Shanghai Terrace
In addition, Shanghai Terrace is serving a six-course dinner menu, capped off with its signature house made mooncakes, starting on September 22 through October 1, 2023 for US$ 188 per guest, plus tax and gratuity. The menu features such delicacies as Peking duck roll, spicy lobster, sesame beef tenderloin and a dessert from the pastry chef.
Mid-Autumn Cocktail
A specialty cocktail is also available during Mid-Autumn Festival in Shanghai Terrace and pairs nicely with mooncakes. The ‘Dragon Well’ is comprised of Longjing tea-infused Tanqueray 10 gin, passionfruit, lime, and lemon shrub.
