Each spring in Japan, the arrival of the sakura (cherry blossoms) is celebrated unlike any other natural phenomenon in the country. Holding special significance for the Japanese people, the short-lived beauty of the sakura flower captures the nation’s heart. Upholding the core brand philosophy of The Peninsula Hotels, which applies elegance and glamour to the location and embraces the distinctive local culture, style, and history, The Peninsula Tokyo is once again proud to creatively showcase the sakura spirit and enable springtime revealers to enjoy the festivities.
This year, the hotel is proud to collaborate with the celebrated Kamon father-and-son artist and design team Mr. Shoryu Hatoba and Mr. Yoho Hatoba, and present their work to a worldwide audience. The hotel's iconic Lobby will be adorned with a giant Kamon artwork entitled “The Peninsula Tokyo + Sakura + Art”. The installation draws the hotel's original crest in the shape of a beloved sakura flower on a national treasure painting dating from 1593. The unique crest is thoughtfully designed by the artists just for this occasion, delicately expressing ‘P’ for Peninsula in the emblem. Seven meters high by eleven meters wide (approx. 23 feet by 36 feet), this gorgeous art wall is printed on 107 strips of Japanese washi paper, blending perfectly with the warm and welcoming ambiance of The Lobby.
Kamon, also known as ‘family crest’, is an emblem form that has been used since ancient times in Japan to identify an individual, a family, or more recently an institution or business entity. Creating Kamon involves using only perfect circles and straight lines. As third- and fourth-generation artists, the father-and-son duo blends the time-honored skill of creating Kamon with contemporary flourishes incorporating their stylish sensibilities and digital technologies.
The art piece will be displayed in The Lobby from March 21 until April 21. A reception party will be held on March 21, where guests can interact with the artists and learn about the installation and the Kamon art form. Spring-inspired canapés and champagne will be served during the event.
One of the hotel’s most popular annual delights is the Sakura Afternoon Tea. Presented on a silver birdcage stand, the colorfully themed Afternoon Tea is brimming with savory seasonal finger foods and sakura-inspired sweets and pastries, including homemade scones. Guests can also select from a range of Peninsula original teas while enjoying the art-inspired lobby ambience and listening to live music from the balcony. The Sakura Afternoon Tea is served at The Lobby each day from 11:30 am to 8:00 pm until April 30, and priced at JPY 9,000 per person.
