The Peninsula Hotels has a long-standing commitment to sharing the unique cultural aspects of its destinations with guests. At each Peninsula property around the world, visitors have the opportunity to engage with local culture by encountering stunning architecture, thoughtful design, team members who are delighted to showcase their home cities – and inspiring local art.
In keeping with this custom, The Peninsula Tokyo is thrilled to announce the installation of a magnificent new artwork in its Lobby from September 6 to November 12, 2024. The grand piece, created by renowned father-and-son artists Shoryu and Yoho Hatoba, is titled “The Peninsula Tokyo + Kaede + Art,” and it offers a vibrant celebration of both the autumn season and Japanese tradition.
The installation, which will be prominently displayed in the Lobby entrance, features two artistic components. The first is an image of a Kamon, or Japanese emblem, specially designed for the hotel in the shape of a cherished maple flower, with petals delicately shaped like the letter “P.” The emblem is set against a much larger reproduction of an antique painting, originally created in 1592. Measuring seven meters high by eleven meters wide (approximately 23 feet by 36 feet), this stunning piece depicts a maple branch with fiery autumn foliage. For the installation, Shoryu and Yoho Hatoba screened the painting across 112 individual strips of Japanese washi paper, creating a louvred wall of vibrant, warm color.
About the Artists
Kamon, also known as “family emblem,” are traditional emblems that have been used since ancient times in Japan to identify individuals, families, or more recently, institutions and businesses. The creation of Kamon relies exclusively on perfect circles and straight lines. As third- and fourth-generation artists, the father-and-son duo of Shoryu and Yoho Hatoba skillfully combine this time-honored craft with contemporary flourishes, integrating their distinctive styles and digital techniques. A portfolio of their works, including a spring 2024 Lobby installation at The Peninsula Tokyo, “The Peninsula Tokyo + Sakura + Art,” can be seen at https://www.kyogen-kamon.com/.
