In keeping with The Peninsula Hotels' commitment to sharing the distinct cultural traditions of its destinations with guests, The Peninsula Tokyo is thrilled to announce it will reprise a magnificent and culturally significant artwork in its lobby from March 1 to May 9, 2025. The grand piece, titled The Peninsula Tokyo + Sakura + Art, and created by renowned father-and-son artists Shoryu and Yoho Hatoba, is a vibrant tribute to both Japan’s spring sakura (cherry-blossom) season and to cherished regional customs.

A Splendid Seasonal Welcome

The artwork, which will be displayed prominently inside the entry of The Peninsula Tokyo, will create a striking visual centerpiece at the heart of the hotel. Standing an impressive 7.6 meters high by 11.2 meters wide (approximately 25 feet by 36 feet), the work is intended to greet the arrival of the spring season, as well as visitors.

Traditional craftsmanship is blended with contemporary artistic expression in The Peninsula Tokyo + Sakura + Art. The piece takes inspiration from a famous painting, Cherry Tree, originally painted around 1593 by Hasegawa Kyuzo and today considered a national treasure. For the work, the artists created a digital rendition of this painting – featuring a majestic sakura tree, with delicate gold and light pink petals. After printing it on washi paper using a special technique, the artists cut the image into 112 strips, which will be suspended from above to create a mesmerizing, iridescent curtain of color.

The installation also incorporates another centuries-old Japanese tradition: a Kamon, or family crest. Since ancient times, these emblems have been used to identify individuals, families, or more recently, businesses. For their artwork, the artists specially designed one just for The Peninsula Tokyo; subtly screened against the larger painting imagery, the symbol takes the shape of an ethereal sakura blossom, with the letter “P” appearing in each of its petals.

As third- and fourth-generation Kamon artists, Shoryu and Yoho Hatoba have mastered this age-old form, while blending it with modern digital technology to create truly timeless designs.

Sakura Afternoon Tea

Another celebration of cherry-blossom season at The Peninsula Tokyo is its annual, beloved Sakura Afternoon Tea. Served each spring in The Lobby restaurant, on an elegant silver birdcage stand, this ritual features a delightful array of savory finger foods, sakura-inspired sweets, and freshly baked homemade scones. Guests can choose from an assortment of signature Peninsula teas while immersing themselves in the art-inspired atmosphere of The Lobby, accompanied by live music from the balcony. The Sakura Afternoon Tea is served at The Lobby daily from 11:30 am to 8:30 pm until April 30, and priced at JPY 9,000 per person (including a glass of mocktail).
